My name is Midori and I’m a Japanese Embroiderer based in London, U.K. I started Japanese embroidery during my university degree in Home Economics at Jissen University in Tokyo, Japan.
I’m involved in a wide range of work at the moment. As well as working on my own artwork, I travel around the world teaching Japanese Embroidery and Kinsai – a traditional Japanese art of fine gold-leaf collage and stencilling. I enjoy teaching because I love meeting my students who teach me different things just as much as I teach them.
I spend at least a month in Japan every year and I’ve maintained strong connections with traditional craftspeople and artists in Tokyo. Working with many students inspire me to keep learning new techniques from the masters in Kyoto every year so I can pass them on. I also supply traditional materials and equipment of the highest quality made by Japanese artisans, who I ‘ve built up great relationships with over the years.
